Call of Duty: Future Warfare Gameplay Leaks Online

An unreleased Call of Duty game with the working title Future Warfare has recently surfaced online and caused quite an uproar among its followers. Call of Duty has been around for almost 20 years and annually releases new installments, to varying degrees of success. Modern Warfare and Black Ops series were particularly well received while some titles fell below expectations. Call of Duty attempted to revive its franchise with new gameplay elements in 2014, including exosuits, jet packs and wall running mechanics. While fans initially responded positively, some felt alienated from these departures from traditional gameplay formulas.

CALL OF DUTY: GAMEPLAY

Call of Duty appears to have ambitions of entering the future earlier than anticipated; recently there has been the release of new gameplay footage for an unannounced Call of Duty title, currently known by its codename NX1. This gameplay, called Future Warfare, boasts an interface similar to that of Modern Warfare trilogy titles; and allows the player to navigate prototype levels – some set in outer space! – featuring modern weapons. Brian Bright, former developer for Call of Duty, confirmed its authenticity via Twitter. This level begins with Walker being found waking up after being assaulted on the moon. Walker and his allies seek shelter inside an overrun base where, due to a breach in an airlock, various individuals were expelled unceremoniously from. Bright mentioned that Neversoft would be handling development of this game following Infinity Ward’s disarray during Modern Warfare 2 production which saw key personnel leave to found Respawn Entertainment.

Activision registered Future Warfare along with Secret and Advanced Warfare domain names in 2010, signaling they may have been under active development for Call of Duty franchise games. Call of Duty: Future Warfare’s gameplay may have had an influence on Call of Duty: Ghosts during development; its opening mission takes place in space with zero gravity gameplay and bears similarities to Ghosts with regards to user interface and protagonist names. Ghosts may have taken its cue from Future Warfare when designing its NX-1 Disruptor weapon; Given Neversoft was one of several support studios working on Ghosts at that time. When Infinity Ward later created Infinite Warfare as part of Call of Duty Infinity Ward developed Infinite Warfare set in space a year later in 2016.
